Appendix 3: Music vocabulary list

What has a composer done when a piece is described as a fusion?

Answer

The blending of more than one musical style or culture to create a new, 'fused' sound - for example Afro-Cuban.

Why

A fusion is genuinely new: elements of both sources are still recognisable but they combine into a single style rather than alternating.

Component 1: Performing

What contextual influences should a performer understand about the piece they perform from a score?

Answer

The composer's intentions about the venue and the nature of the performance, and any important cultural influences on the piece.

Why

This links to musical contexts: purpose, intention, audience, time and place all shape how a piece should sound.

Component 2: Composing

What does the Component 2 heading compositional techniques and strategies cover?

Answer

How to write for instruments, voices and/or technology, and how to develop musical ideas within chosen forms and structures.

Why

It includes efficient, sensitive and idiomatic handling of timbres and textures, plus the principles of rhythmic, melodic and harmonic construction.
