Resource management

Why are fossil fuels and metal ores described as non-renewable?

Answer

They took millions of years to form, so they are being used far faster than they can ever be replaced. The stock in the Earth's crust is finite.

Why

These are sometimes called stock resources. New reserves can still be discovered, but the total amount present cannot increase on a human timescale.

Geographical investigations - UK challenges

What does the Sandford Principle say should happen when conservation and recreation conflict in a National Park?

Answer

Where the conflict cannot be resolved, conservation of the landscape and wildlife takes priority over public enjoyment.

Why

It is set out in the Environment Act 1995 for England and Wales. It does not ban visitors: most conflicts are handled by zoning, footpath repair and visitor management rather than by exclusion.

Global development

What range of values can an HDI score take, and what does a high score show?

Answer

Between 0 and 1. A score close to 1 shows very high human development; a score close to 0 shows low human development.

Why

Countries are grouped into low, medium, high and very high bands. A country can have a fairly high income but a lower HDI if its health or education figures lag behind.
