Component 2: set texts

What does Blake mean by a chartered street?

Answer

Owned, licensed and mapped out by law. He applies the same word to the Thames, so even a river that ought to run free has been turned into somebody's property.

Why

A charter was normally boasted of as a guarantee of liberty. Blake turns the word inside out: the documents that grant rights to some are the ones that fence everybody else out.

Component 2: 19th-century Novel and Poetry

What counts as detailed textual reference when you cannot quote a poem exactly?

Answer

Naming the specific image, line or moment and describing it accurately, so it is clear you are pointing at a real part of the text.

Why

Accuracy matters more than length. A precise reference to a single image is worth more than a long quotation remembered wrongly.

Component 1: Shakespeare and Post-1914

Which words are worth checking most carefully for spelling in a literature essay?

Answer

The writer's name, the characters' names, the title of the text and the literary terms you use, since these recur throughout the answer.

Why

A misspelling repeated twenty times is far more visible than a one-off slip. Capital letters are needed for names and for the title of the text.
