Component 2: Non-fiction and Transactional

What is a writer's viewpoint?

Answer

The attitude or opinion the writer takes towards the subject, shown through word choice, tone and the detail they choose to include.

Why

Viewpoint is not always stated openly. Look at what a writer dwells on, and at what they leave out.

Component 1: Fiction and Imaginative Writing

Explain the difference between summarising and analysing a text.

Answer

Summarising states what the text is about. Analysing explains how the writer's choices create meaning and effect.

Why

A common error is to analyse when the question asks for summary. Read the command word before you begin.

Component 2: Non-fiction and Transactional

What is meant by register?

Answer

The level of formality of the language chosen, from formal and impersonal through to casual, matched to the audience and the situation.

Why

Slipping register - contractions or slang inside a formal letter - is a common error and is easy to fix on a final read-through.
