Three cards from the deck, as you will see them in BrainBerry: the question, the answer, and an explanation of why.

Separate chemistry 2

Give the formula of methanoic acid and describe its displayed structure.

Answer

HCOOH. A carbon atom with a hydrogen atom attached, a double bond to one oxygen and a single bond to a second oxygen, which carries a hydrogen atom.

Why

Methanoic acid is the first carboxylic acid, with only one carbon atom, and that carbon is part of the acid group itself. It is the acid in an ant sting.

Chemical changes

What is seen at each electrode when copper sulfate solution is electrolysed with inert electrodes?

Answer

A pink-brown layer of copper builds up on the cathode and bubbles of oxygen appear at the anode. The blue colour of the solution fades.

Why

The gas relights a glowing splint, which is the test for oxygen. The solution turns more acidic as copper ions are removed and hydrogen ions are left behind.

Key concepts in chemistry

State the relative mass and relative charge of a neutron.

Answer

Relative mass 1, relative charge 0.

Why

A neutron has the same relative mass as a proton but carries no charge, so adding neutrons changes an atom's mass without changing its charge or its element.
