Edexcel GCSE Design Technology
revision flashcards

1,663 free study cards across 8 topics, written to the Edexcel specification. Study them as flashcards or multiple choice, and rate each one Got it, Almost or Forgot.

Topics

Every card is tagged to a topic in the Edexcel GCSE Design Technology specification, so you can revise one topic at a time.

Sample cards

Three cards from the deck, as you will see them in BrainBerry: the question, the answer, and an explanation of why.

CORE

Which property of tracing paper makes it useful to a designer, and give one use.

Answer

It is translucent, so lines on a sheet underneath show through it. It is used to copy or trace an existing drawing and to overlay new ideas on a design.

Why

Tracing paper is thin, typically 60 to 90 gsm, and very smooth. It suits pencil and technical pen but cockles badly if wet media are used on it. Translucent means light passes through but the image is not sharp.

Metals

Name the four countries given as sources of copper, and say how the metal reaches the purity that cable needs.

Answer

The USA, Chile, Zambia and Russia. The ore is crushed and concentrated, smelted to drive off the sulfur, and then refined by electrolysis.

Why

Copper for wiring has to be over 99.9 per cent pure, because impurities raise its resistance. The sulfur dioxide given off during smelting must be captured or it causes acid rain.

Systems

State Ohm's Law and use it to find the current when 9 V is applied across a 450 ohm resistor.

Answer

V = I x R, so I = V / R. Here I = 9 / 450 = 0.02 A, which is 20 mA.

Why

The rearrangements are I = V / R and R = V / I. Put volts, amps and ohms into the formula, never millivolts or milliamps. Check the sense of the answer: a larger resistance on the same supply must give a smaller current.
