Problem solving with programming

Why would a programmer use format () on a string before printing it?

Answer

To customise the output so it suits the problem and the user, for example lining values up in columns with a set number of decimal places.

Why

format () puts values into a string whose content is described by symbols and placeholders, written in curly brackets inside the string.

Data

Convert 3 mebibytes into kibibytes.

Answer

3 x 1024 = 3072 KiB.

Why

Multiply by 1024 when moving to a smaller unit and divide by 1024 when moving to a larger one. Multiplying by 1000 is a common mistake with binary multiples.

Computational thinking

What does integer division give you?

Answer

The whole number part of a division, with the remainder thrown away. For example 17 DIV 5 is 3.

Why

In Python integer division is written as //. Do not confuse it with ordinary division: 17 / 5 gives 3.4, but 17 // 5 gives 3.
