How does a theme and variations movement work?

Answer

A simple theme is stated, then repeated several times with each statement varied in melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, key or tempo.

Why

Common devices are adding ornaments, changing to the tonic minor, adding a countermelody or turning the tune into triplets.

Understanding music

Name two devices Handel uses in his choral writing to decorate and dramatise the words.

Answer

Melisma, where many notes are sung to one syllable, and word painting, where the music imitates the meaning of the text.

Why

Handel also alternates imitative fugal entries with solid homophonic blocks to vary the texture.

Understanding music

What is ritornello form in a Baroque concerto?

Answer

A recurring tutti theme for the full ensemble that returns in different keys between contrasting solo episodes.

Why

'Ritornello' means 'little return'. The first and last statements are in the tonic; those in between visit related keys.
