Three cards from the deck, as you will see them in BrainBerry: the question, the answer, and an explanation of why.
Theme 1: Investigating small business
A shareholder invests £5,000 in a private limited company that later fails owing £60,000. What is the most she can lose?
Answer
£5,000, the amount she invested. Limited liability means she is not personally responsible for the rest of the company's debts.
Why
A frequent error is to divide the remaining debt between the shareholders. The £60,000 is owed by the company, not by its owners.
Theme 2: Building a business
What is meant by cost of sales?
Answer
The direct cost of making or buying in the goods the business has actually sold, such as raw materials or stock bought for resale.
Why
Cost of sales leaves out indirect running costs like rent, office salaries and advertising. Those are removed later as other operating expenses when working out net profit.
Theme 1: Investigating small business
How are profit and loss worked out?
Answer
Profit = revenue - total costs. If total costs are greater than revenue the answer is negative and the business has made a loss.
Why
Profit measures a period of trading, such as a month or a year. It is not the amount of cash sitting in the bank account.
