Option 11: Medicine in Britain, c1250-present

How did Joseph Lister cut deaths from infection after operations?

Answer

From 1865 he applied carbolic acid to wounds, dressings and instruments to kill germs, an approach known as antiseptic surgery.

Why

Lister was acting on Pasteur's germ theory, and death rates among his patients fell sharply. Later surgeons moved to aseptic methods that kept germs out of the theatre altogether.

Option P2: British America, 1713-83: empire and revolution

Give two things the mainland colonies sold to the West Indies.

Answer

Any two of: grain and other foodstuffs, salted fish, timber and barrel staves, and livestock such as horses.

Why

The sugar islands used nearly all their land for sugar, so they had to buy food and wood. In return the mainland took sugar, molasses and rum.

Option 33: The USA, 1954-75: conflict at home and abroad

Why did fear of communism lead many Americans to support the war?

Answer

They accepted containment and the domino theory: letting South Vietnam fall would spread communism across Asia and weaken the USA in the Cold War.

Why

Many also felt a patriotic duty to back servicemen already fighting, and believed that protest at home encouraged the enemy to keep going.
