Shakespeare and the 19th-century novel

What is life like at Lowood under Mr Brocklehurst?

Answer

Cold rooms, burnt porridge, cropped hair and long sermons; he stands Jane on a stool and denounces her as a liar in front of the whole school.

Why

He claims his mission is to 'mortify... the lusts of the flesh' (Ch 7) while his own family arrive in velvet and curls. Miss Temple later clears Jane's name publicly, restoring her reputation.

Modern texts and poetry

What should you work out on your first reading of an unseen poem?

Answer

Who is speaking, the situation they are in, what they feel about it, and whether that feeling changes by the end.

Why

Read the poem twice before you plan. Then answer the question actually asked: the stem names a focus, such as the speaker's feelings about a place, and every paragraph should serve it.

Skills

What does AO1 reward in a literature answer?

Answer

Reading and responding to the text with a clear personal interpretation, and supporting every point with well-chosen textual references.

Why

AO1 carries 37.5% of the marks, just behind AO2 at 42.5%. It is not a plot-retelling mark: an answer that only tells the story shows understanding but gives no interpretation for the references to support.
