Three cards from the deck, as you will see them in BrainBerry: the question, the answer, and an explanation of why.
Designing and making principles
What is a design specification?
Answer
A list of criteria the design must meet, covering things such as function, size, cost, materials, user needs and safety.
Why
Each point should be measurable so the finished prototype can be tested against it - 'must weigh under 500 g' rather than 'must be light'.
Core technical principles
Give one way new and emerging technologies have changed society.
Answer
They change how people live and work - smartphones and fast internet let people work from home, shop online and stay in touch anywhere.
Why
There are negatives too: less face-to-face contact, more screen time, and people who cannot afford or use new technology are left behind.
Specialist technical principles
What is meant by the stock form of a material?
Answer
The standard shape and size in which a material is supplied by the manufacturer, before the designer cuts or shapes it.
Why
Stock form is what you buy, not what you make. Buying a stock form close to the finished size means less cutting, less waste and less machining time.
