Chemistry of the atmosphere

What was the main gas thought to be present in the Earth's early atmosphere?

Answer

Carbon dioxide.

Why

Carbon dioxide was released in huge amounts by volcanoes, and most of it stayed in the atmosphere until the oceans formed and photosynthesis began.

Quantitative chemistry

What is the atom economy of a reaction that has only one product?

Answer

100%.

Why

All of the mass of the reactants ends up in the one product, so none is wasted as a by-product.

Using resources

Answer

Limestone, sand and sodium carbonate.
