Where is a pivot joint found and what movement does it allow?
In the neck, between the top two vertebrae (the atlas and the axis). It allows rotation only.
Turning the head to look over the shoulder before a rugby pass uses the pivot joint of the neck. Nodding uses a different movement of the neck.
What is tidal volume, and what happens to it during exercise?
The volume of air breathed in or out per breath. During exercise it increases, so more oxygen is taken in and more carbon dioxide removed.
Tidal volume at rest is about 500 ml. Both tidal volume and breathing rate increase during exercise; multiplied together they give minute ventilation.
What is meant by obesity?
A clinical classification for having a very high amount of excess body fat, usually defined as a BMI of 30 or above.
A BMI of 25 to 29.9 is classed as overweight; 30 and above as obese. BMI is a rough screening measure and can misclassify very muscular performers.
