How the economy works

What is expansionary monetary policy?

Answer

Cutting interest rates and/or increasing the money supply, so borrowing and spending rise and aggregate demand increases.

Why

It is used in a downturn to support growth and employment. The risk is that faster spending pushes inflation above target.

How markets work

What is a monopoly?

Answer

A market supplied by a single dominant seller, so consumers have no close alternative supplier to turn to.

Why

A monopoly is not simply a large firm. What matters is its market share and the absence of rivals. In the UK a share of 25% or more is often treated as monopoly power.

How markets work

What does scarcity mean in economics?

Answer

There are not enough resources available to satisfy everyone's wants.

Why

Scarcity is not the same as poverty or a shortage. A resource is scarce whenever people want more of it than exists, even in a rich country.
