Living with the physical environment

What is beach nourishment?

Answer

Adding sand or shingle to an existing beach, usually dredged from the sea bed, to make it wider and higher.

Why

A wider beach absorbs more wave energy and looks natural, but it must be repeated regularly as material continues to be eroded and moved.

Living with the physical environment

How does channel straightening reduce flood risk?

Answer

Removing meanders creates a shorter, straighter channel, so water moves faster through the area.

Why

This can increase flood risk further downstream, where the extra water arrives more quickly.

Challenges in the human environment

How is the UK connected to the wider world economically?

Answer

Through international trade, transport links such as major airports and the Channel Tunnel, and electronic communication.

Why

These connections give the UK strong trade and cultural links with Europe, the Commonwealth and the rest of the world.
