What do sociologists mean by deviance?
Behaviour that breaks the norms and expectations of a group or society and attracts a negative reaction, though it may not be illegal.
Norms are the rules for behaviour in a situation; values are the wider beliefs about what matters. Deviance is judged against norms, so it varies by situation.
